Countries of Africa Quiz
Africa has more countries than any other continent, 54 in all, from Algeria, the largest by area, to the Seychelles, a scatter of islands in the Indian Ocean. Many of its borders are straight lines drawn by colonial powers in the late 1800s, which is why the Sahara countries look like they were cut out with a ruler.
That makes Africa the hardest continent for most people in a shape quiz and one of the most rewarding to learn: once you know the ruler-straight north, the long thin coastal states of the west (the Gambia is a river with a country around it) and the Great Lakes cluster in the east, the map falls into place quickly.
10 questions from 49 countries, four choices each. A new mix every round.
Study tips for Africa
- Shapes: Anchor on the giants first (Algeria, the DR Congo, Sudan, Libya), then work outwards: the small West African coastal strips are easier once their big neighbours are placed.
- Flags: Many flags share the pan-African green, gold and red (Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cameroon); look at the order of the stripes and whether they run across or down.
- Borders: A country that borders both Egypt and Chad is Sudan or Libya; nine neighbours, from Angola round to South Sudan, is the DR Congo. Count the neighbours before you read them.
