Found your word? Try it on today's puzzle: play Funzzle Word, a free daily five-letter word game with a coach that explains each guess.

How to use the word finder

Pick the word length first; everything else is optional. Starts with, Ends with and Contains take a run of letters (ST, ED, IGH). Letters in position takes one letter per box, for when you know exactly where a letter goes. Must include is for letters you know are in the word but not where, and Exclude is for letters you've ruled out.

Results list common words first. Tick Include less common words to add rarer and Scrabble-only words, shown in grey. Every search is saved in the address bar, so you can bookmark it or send it to someone.

Using it for Wordle and other daily word games

Green letters go in Letters in position, yellow letters in Must include, and gray letters in Exclude. A yellow letter also tells you where the letter isn't; for that, and to rank the remaining words by how much each guess would tell you, use the Wordle Solver.

If you'd rather solve it yourself, play Funzzle Word: a free daily five-letter word game whose coach explains, after each guess, how many words are still possible and why.

Crosswords and Scrabble

For a crossword, set the length and fill in the letters you have from crossing answers; for a clue with a missing word, the clue search on Funzzle searches past answers by clue too. For Scrabble or Words With Friends, Include less common words adds the extra word-game vocabulary, and the anagram solver finds words you can make from your rack.

Questions people ask

Which dictionary does the word finder use?

SCOWL, the open word lists behind most spell checkers (American English, no proper nouns or abbreviations), plus the ENABLE word-game list for five-letter words. Offensive words are filtered out.

Why is a word I know missing?

It may be a proper noun, a hyphenated word, or rarer than the lists go. Try Include less common words. The finder covers words of 3 to 15 letters.

Can I search for words with a letter in one position but not another?

Put the known letters in their boxes and the letters to avoid in Exclude. For Wordle's "yellow" rule (in the word, but not in this spot), the Wordle Solver handles it directly.

Does it work offline?

Once a word length has loaded, searching that length needs no connection: the filtering runs on your device.
